Have you seen that meme where it’s a picture of the first kid’s nursery and its all beautiful and done up, and below it is the second kid’s nursery and it’s just a mattress on the floor in a blank room. I literally laughed out loud when I saw it because it’s so true. With Mykenzi, even though I ran it down to the wire, her room was perfect, and then she never slept in it until she was 13 months old. So, when we found out we were expecting again, I wasn’t really in a rush to put together a nursery I knew the kid was probably not going to sleep in for a while, besides at the time we only had a 3 bedroom house and the new nursery was a much needed playroom. Fast forward a few months and we learned we’d be relocating when Rowan was only 8 weeks old, so the whole nursery deal was off at that point. We moved to a 2 bedroom apartment for 3 months while we house hunted and finally, we found a house and I could begin Rowan’s nursery.
Sure, he’s almost 11 months old, but hey, Mykenzi didn’t even sleep in hers until 13 months, so if you want to get technical I’m still ahead of schedule. The kid’s rooms always tend to be my favorite spaces, with both of their rooms I wanted them to be bright, airy, and inviting. I did know from the moment I found out Rowan was a boy that I wanted a monochromatic room, I just didn’t know how I wanted to execute it. Fortunately enough, I’ve had time to pick up pieces here and there that I know would make it perfect when the time came to put it all together. I absolutely could not have made this nursery look as beautiful as it does without some amazing small shops. Y’all, small shops are where it’s at! I love the personalization small shops offer you. They allow you to really define your space and make it your own, and that’s exactly what happened in Rowan’s room and I couldn’t love it more!

I didn’t go with a “theme” other than black and white. I chose to do all different shapes and prints with minimal pops of color. I then topped off the monochromatic look with a Lorena Canals Washable Rug. Y’all the washable part is important because I literally had it on the floor for 2.7 seconds and Rowan spit up on it. Such is life, right? I just popped that bad boy in the washer and the damage was undone. Tah Dah! Every home needs a Lorena Canals Rug, or five.
His bedding is from a few small shops. His crib sheet is from Modern Burlap who also has the most amazing swaddle blankets. The crib sheet is also made from the same Organic Muslin Cotton they use for their Swaddles so it’s super soft, not to mention, super cute! His “Rowan” Blanket is from Alyson Scarlett Nursery and it’s one of my faves. The owner also has another small shop called Leotudes and she makes the most adorable personalized leos! All my girl moms need to check her out. In addition to the personalized blanket, I also have a crib quilt which I got for Rowan when he was born from Ollie & Olina. It’s the perfect pop of bright color this nursery needed. I’m hoping to keep this for Rowan to pass on when he decides to have babies. To finish off the bedding I added a simple “R” pillow from Shop Highway 3. It’s really the defining piece that brings all the bedding together.
For decor I kept it simple. I still have a few finishing touches, like adding in a gallery wall, but I’m still collecting pieces for that. My favorite piece is the tree picture which is actually my placenta from my pregnancy with Rowan. I had it encapsulated and before they encapsulated it they created this placenta tree with food coloring that I framed and hung in his room. I decided to hang it next to this print from Paper Finch Designs. I knew I wanted this quote somewhere in his nursery as soon as I saw it. My pregnancy with Rowan was insanely difficult, so seeing these two pieces hang next to each other is the perfect reminder of the rainbow after the storm.

I also love these prints from Hi Kids Co. I mean, a little boys room is not complete without a printable that says, I love my Mom. Am I right?!
I’m still adding pieces all the time, but so far I’m loving his room. Now we just have to get him to sleep in it! Hah.
